I think it did. The Fire Nation started attacking before the Avatar disappeared (Roku was there when they took the Earth Kingdom colonies).
I like the idea of adding the impending doom thing to the Air Nomads... what if you see a bunch of monks meditating outside when the shadow falls (either metaphorically or not)... then one opens his/her eyes (Gyatso?) and looks up into the air?
