How advanced should the Fire Nation be? - Thu Jul 08, 2010 1:16 am
I don't know. If we don't need to include minor characters like that, I don't think we should. We have to trim this movie down as much as possible. Even just a minute or two on extra, unnecessary characters is too much, when their only function can easily be taken over by a more necessary person or plot device.

The allegory of Fire Nation = imperial Japan, Earth Kingdom = China was subtle in the show, but it'll feel like a fantasy retread of WWII if the Fire Nation uses Japanese while the Earth Kingdom uses Chinese. As is, the nations have their own unique favor while borrowing from East Asian culture without being too specific, and that gives us billingul bonus without getting political about it.
Imagine this as a real movie showing a Tibet-like nation being destroyed by a China-like nation. The controversy would be pretty intense.
I think keeping everyone writing Chinese will be good enough. Sometimes if it's not broken, a repair job is not really needed (I'm pretty sure that's how that saying goes).
I can't help but agree. Those are the moral and ethical reasons why we should do it that way. Now add to it practical reasons. We've got one or two people who can read and write Chinese really well, and then a few more (like me) who can write it on a conversational level. So it's believeable that we can make that work. We'll mangle little of it, and what we do mess up, people will be willing to excuse given that this is an amateur project.
We can't even get close with the other languages, though. We don't know anyone who would be able to do it, who would be willing to do it for free, with those other reasons. And A:TLA got enough controversy for mirroring the China-Tibet debate even without being explicit. No need to aggravate it when it's so much easier to just stick with the languages we know. English and Chinese will work well.
Unless someone thinks we should use Spanish in there somewhere.

Personally, I don't think he serves much of a purpose in the first film. We're going to be rushed as it is trying to fit in all of the necessary plot points- if there's anything we can cut, I think we should cut it.
He is a cool character, and we should most definitely include him in the sequel. Maybe we can hint at him in movie 1- make a wanted poster in the background, have a soldier mention bandits making life miserable, something like that. I can't think of a justification to give him actual screentime, though.

But yeah, Chinese text should defiantly be in there somewhere.
Alright, so basically, you're saying we should assign a culture to each nation? Like (for example) Fire Nation being Chinese, Air Nomads being Tibetan, Southern Water Tribes being Inuit... and on and on? That could be promising, if we could definitively agree on which nation should match up with which culture.
The one problem with this would be that, while Icy seems to know Chinese pretty well (much better than I do
Unless someone knows people who write and read the languages we'd be needing?

Exactly what I was thinking.
Maybe the Gaang can go to Kyoshi to pick up supplies for their Earth Kingtom journeys at the beginning of the 2nd movie, only to find it in shambles because of a Fire Nation raid, and Suki chooses to stay behind and help the villagers rebuild the town.
Then at some point later she can try to join the others at Ba Sing Se, but on her way there she gets attacked by Ozai's Angels.
Good ideas. ^_^ Also, what if we added an emotional aspect into it? Some romantic tension with Sokka. I have Nyquil in my system, so I don't know if this will sound good to anyone who's sober right now. But Suki always showed this soft, inner feminine side on the show, along with her fierce warrior side. What if we have her leave to help her village, but also because she's upset/jealous/feeling rejected/some other emotion over the Yuekka romance? While she's off dealing with that, the Gaang can go on their way, Suki can get kidnapped, we can have Sokka finding out and being upset...

If you'll read the posts before yours, you'll notice that's what everyone is saying. They'll meet the Kyoshi Warriors, but only Suki will go with them.
Opening? - Sun Jul 04, 2010 4:28 pm
I like this idea. We can show the martial arts aspect when Katara goes all "Water. Earth. Fire. Air." So maybe after that, we should show brief clips of normal families from each nation, herding bison and growing plants and hunting animals?
We could even make it ominous with the Air one, and have them looking up as a shadow passes over them, to see an impending Fire Nation attack (dragon, flying machine, black soot- whatever we could make fit).

Here's the major question. Do we want to take M Night's approach, and try to make this movie multi-cultural? Or do we want to make like the show, and make it Asian with (what looked like to me) a focus on Chinese culture? If we do the second option, I think Chinese texts would look really great.
If not, someone's going to have to start practicing their fake Chinese characters.

Okay, this sounds like a good idea. So the Gaang will meet the Kyoshi Warriors briefly, and Suki will follow them (probably for the Avatar, later for Sokka) to the North Pole. I'd be interested to see her react to the Yuekka things, if she even feels that way at that point. We can have her fighting and looking awesome, and it'll introduce the Kyoshi Warriors without complications.
At the beginning of Movie 2, it would be pretty easy to have some Big Problem come up on Kyoshi Island, so that she has to go back home for a while.
Koizilla vs. Tidal Wave, which is better for live-action? - Sun Jul 04, 2010 4:19 pm
I like 47's idea. That's basically how it worked in the show (although Aang never really angsted about it later), and it helped set up Aang's character much better- he still couldn't completely control the Avatar State at the end of that season, so even though in a way he helped them win, he still had a lot of work to do.
The only thing we have to worry about is, if we're keeping it realistic, we want to make movie number one really good and satisfying if we want it to be successful enough to make a sequel. And even though we know it's going to be amazing (because we said so
), a real film would always have to take into consideration that it might be the last and not have sequels at all, for whatever reason.
So the one concern with an ending like that is, is it really satisfying if the heroes win at the end only because Aang was forced to do something he morally found horrible? Again, I like this idea, but we'd need to find a way to deal with that.
Who should play Aang? - Sun Jul 04, 2010 3:29 am
I concur. If Noah Ringer had gotten better lines and acting direction, he would have been amazing- the end of the movie was pretty great for him, as it was. Let's keep him. ![]()

I love the bone look of them- they could be awesome for Water Tribes people! Especially Southern Water Tribe.

I know we probably won't have time to include the mechanist, but honestly, one of the coolest parts about the Fire Nation is all of their great machines. Live action is such a great way to showcase awesome machinery, too.
Of course, since this is mostly a water-based, naval kind of show, most of the technology will be on the ships. Those have to be metal- putting firebenders on a wooden ship is a laughable idea- so I can't see it differing too much from the show. Unless someone can come up with some creative ideas, that is?
