Don't like "The Last Airbender"? Neither do we -- that's why we're remaking it.

What plots/episodes need to be included in the movie? - Fri Jul 02, 2010 12:55 am

It all depends on what we need to do in order to make a fulfilling movie while still staying true to the series. In my opinion, here's the minimum:

  • Aang needs to embrace that he is the Avatar and a leader and get over the destruction of the Air Nomads. We also have to know that he's the last of his kind, of course, and that he has a big responsibility. Roku and Kyoshi should get a mention; Roku should be our fail-safe when no one in the movie knows what to do next.
  • Sokka doesn't quite need a plot-line yet, but I'd like him to be a goofy, somewhat closed-minded chauvinist jerk at the beginning, and then as the body count starts, realize that his actions are somewhat trivial and 'grow up'. His eyes will open, basically. He'll have his funny moments, but not at the expense of others, and not as often. His leadership comes into question in movie 3, with the Invasion, so we don't have to worry about that yet.
  • Katara going around giving hope to everyone, mothering folks, and learning waterbending. S1 wasn't really her season. If she has any kind of growth it'll be toward a deep relationship with Aang and a huge appreciation for her sew-my-pants brother. She has Dedication and she'll probably be the one urging the plot forward when no one else wants to go.
  • Make us care about Yue, even a little bit. I don't know how, but we have to fit a scene with just Sokka and her doing something romantic/cute that'll get us to want her to stick around. Maybe something a bit more revealing to her character. If we need a Hahn, I'm all for it -- I want him to be played by someone obnoxious like Taylor Lautner. (That is a joke. Kind-of.)
  • Zhao is a jerk and that's all we need to know. He's the epitome of Bad Man.
  • Iroh's morality should be a bit mysterious at first. We should know he slaughtered Earth Kingdom people, but then know his son died and now he's strangely gentle and eccentric. His love for Zuko and trying to dissuade him from the chase should also be apparent.
  • Zuko's single-track mind for Aang. It should be mostly about his honor at this point, but we should have hints of a good heart, i.e. Blue Spirit. Of all the things M. Night did, and I know most of you won't agree, I really did enjoy the scene where he asked the little boy what the prince did -- a bit more touching than him randomly angsting.
  • A basic intro to all four nations and the state they're in. Air Nomads = peaceful but now dead. Aang loved them. Fire Nation = mostly assholes. Earth Kingdom = a few scattered empires, but mostly rebels barely keeping it together and in need of hope. SWT = decimated. NWT = the Americans in all this until the FN gets to their Pearl Harbor, so to speak.
  • Suki, Jet, Bumi, Haru, and the rest of the Earth Kingdom kids are up for discussion and that discussion goes in their own respective threads. I really feel like a lot of them can be combined in a graceful way and still help the plot along -- Sokka learning not to be a jerk, Aang learning how to be a leader, or Katara giving hope. If all else fails, they have to help them get to the North or escape from Zuko/Iroh or Zhao.

Whichever episodes lend to these ideals would stay in, in my opinion. Again, as I'll say in a million threads, I'll need to really sit and watch all the episodes of season one to get a feel for what's important and what isn't. I advise you all do the same.

Koizilla vs. Tidal Wave, which is better for live-action? - Fri Jul 02, 2010 12:35 am

Removed your poll, only because I'm afraid people might get confused and think it a finalization poll. At any rate -- I'm really going to have to watch the cartoon again, but can't we combine both a tidal wave and Koizilla? We really ought to discuss Koizilla's importance, if any, to the character arc of Aang or to the world around him. Obviously he's neat, and gives Zhao what he deserves, but is he important? What do you all think?

Maori symbols = necklaces or designs? - Fri Jul 02, 2010 12:33 am

These guys have some beautiful necklaces that I think might go well with certain benders, if anyone thinks we should incorporate it into a design.

This might go well with an airbender.

This, I'm not sure -- it's some kind of water/fire mix. Looking at it, I could almost picture a Fire Nation soldier (Zhao?) picking it up as a WT necklace and carving it (or having it carved) into a FN symbol. Mostly just to spite someone, because he's a prick.

This one -- earth. Part of a Kyoshi's fan, perhaps, or some other little dangly bit?

So here it is. Our board. - Thu Jul 01, 2010 11:33 pm

Here's our home for the next few months. It's going to get better, I assure you; I'm going to attempt to create a layout for it and generally fix it up when I don't feel like I could sleep twelve hours. For now, make yourselves comfortable, and please let me know if something doesn't work right.

"Other" Rules - Thu Jul 01, 2010 11:29 pm

Discussion on voice-overs, advertisements, storyboarding, scoring and other such works go here. As with the other forums, please do keep one topic per idea/creation/inspiration, please.

Written Works Rules - Thu Jul 01, 2010 11:28 pm

There isn't much to say here, as we aren't quite there yet, but a topic and eventually finalization poll will be created for each scene. All members are welcome to critique the lines, but be aware that too many cooks spoil the broth -- in other words, one might have to give leeway to another person's idea.

Design Rules - Thu Jul 01, 2010 11:26 pm

Any and all designs related to costumes, make-up, sets, and props go here. Suggestions and possible inspirations can also make their home here. Please create a thread for any new idea, but be aware it may fall into another category. 'Azula's outfit' can stand on its own, as well as 'Indian casual wear inspiration'; but 'Azula's casual wear, Indian-based?' may not.

Casting Rules - Thu Jul 01, 2010 11:21 pm

Talk on the casting of the film goes here. Please place any and all suggestions in one thread for one character. The board is open to any living actor or any board member willing to audition. The only criteria that the person needs is a likeness to the character and a display of decent acting ability -- the rest is merely a bonus. As always, there will be a vote.

There will be no discussion of racebending here. The show is about the balance of four distinct nations and the transcending of race lines; we should adhere to that. As said above, we only take into account the likeness of the character and the ability of the person to act. If one member thinks Aang is white, and likewise suggests a white little boy, but another thinks he is Korean and suggests a Korean actor, only the poll will show who Aang truly is.

Plot & Canon Rules - Thu Jul 01, 2010 11:17 pm

Discussions of the actual meat of the film -- the plots, the scenes, and the arcs -- belongs in here. Please create a new topic for every aspect that needs to be discussed; for example, if there is no topic on Suki's role, make one. If there is already a topic for Zhao vs. Koizilla, place any talk on his death within that page.

As outlined in the general rules, after discussion has reached a stalemate or if members request it, voting will begin. Always be aware of what polls have been finalized, for it may effect another topic immensely. If the board decides to cut Bumi, for example, that may just give more screen time to Suki -- or poke a hole in your suggestion that she be his daughter.

Itinerary - Thu Jul 01, 2010 11:13 pm

This post outlines the board's location in the process of the movie -- that is, are we casting? Are we writing? A crossed-out item indicates our finalization of that aspect of the film. A member may discuss (or design, or create) any other part of the film even if it is not on the itinerary, but recall that we may not finalize anything until we get to it. (Don't, for example, expect us to cast Jet if we have no idea whether or not he is going to be in our 'film'.)

General Rules - Thu Jul 01, 2010 11:03 pm

The 'director' and admin of the board is Mandy. She can be reached at her e-mail and her messaging contacts can be given on request. Other than in voting ties and stalemate issues, she does not hold any more sway over the movie than any other person, and cannot vote. She has the right to ban a member repeatedly violating the following rules as she sees fit:

  1. All discussion should be kept at a respectful rating. Cursing is fine in moderation.

  2. A member doesn't need a degree in English to post, but keep in mind that chatspeak and poor grammar tends to irk everyone else.

  3. Flames will not be tolerated -- that is, insulting another person without reason. To call one's idea stupid is far different from calling one stupid.

  4. Trolling also will lead you down the path of darkness, young one. Trolling is when a member purposefully creates inflammatory posts to incite a reaction.

  5. Spam will be deleted. Please keep your posts meaningful. Banter is acceptable, but trash is not.

  6. Keep signatures at a proper size, please. If Mandy decides that a signature is too distracting, she will ask the member to cut it down, or else take it upon herself to do so.

  7. The race debate ends here. For all intents and purposes, we do not consider race in casting an actor -- simply their ability, past experiences, and likeness to the character in question.

  8. Respect opinions not your own. Some may have liked M. Night's adaptation; some may not. Likewise, some may want to take the movie in a far different direction than yours. This is not reason to insult them.

  9. All creative moves will be decided democratically. Once a certain point in discussion has been reached, decided by Mandy through the discretion of the members, a poll will be created to vote on the aspect of the film in question. After a week, the selection with the highest number of votes goes through.
