- Aang needs to embrace that he is the Avatar and a leader and get over the destruction of the Air Nomads. We also have to know that he's the last of his kind, of course, and that he has a big responsibility. Roku and Kyoshi should get a mention; Roku should be our fail-safe when no one in the movie knows what to do next.
- Sokka doesn't quite need a plot-line yet, but I'd like him to be a goofy, somewhat closed-minded chauvinist jerk at the beginning, and then as the body count starts, realize that his actions are somewhat trivial and 'grow up'. His eyes will open, basically. He'll have his funny moments, but not at the expense of others, and not as often. His leadership comes into question in movie 3, with the Invasion, so we don't have to worry about that yet.
- Katara going around giving hope to everyone, mothering folks, and learning waterbending. S1 wasn't really her season. If she has any kind of growth it'll be toward a deep relationship with Aang and a huge appreciation for her sew-my-pants brother. She has Dedication and she'll probably be the one urging the plot forward when no one else wants to go.
- Make us care about Yue, even a little bit. I don't know how, but we have to fit a scene with just Sokka and her doing something romantic/cute that'll get us to want her to stick around. Maybe something a bit more revealing to her character. If we need a Hahn, I'm all for it -- I want him to be played by someone obnoxious like Taylor Lautner. (That is a joke. Kind-of.)
- Zhao is a jerk and that's all we need to know. He's the epitome of Bad Man.
- Iroh's morality should be a bit mysterious at first. We should know he slaughtered Earth Kingdom people, but then know his son died and now he's strangely gentle and eccentric. His love for Zuko and trying to dissuade him from the chase should also be apparent.
- Zuko's single-track mind for Aang. It should be mostly about his honor at this point, but we should have hints of a good heart, i.e. Blue Spirit. Of all the things M. Night did, and I know most of you won't agree, I really did enjoy the scene where he asked the little boy what the prince did -- a bit more touching than him randomly angsting.
- A basic intro to all four nations and the state they're in. Air Nomads = peaceful but now dead. Aang loved them. Fire Nation = mostly assholes. Earth Kingdom = a few scattered empires, but mostly rebels barely keeping it together and in need of hope. SWT = decimated. NWT = the Americans in all this until the FN gets to their Pearl Harbor, so to speak.
- Suki, Jet, Bumi, Haru, and the rest of the Earth Kingdom kids are up for discussion and that discussion goes in their own respective threads. I really feel like a lot of them can be combined in a graceful way and still help the plot along -- Sokka learning not to be a jerk, Aang learning how to be a leader, or Katara giving hope. If all else fails, they have to help them get to the North or escape from Zuko/Iroh or Zhao.
Whichever episodes lend to these ideals would stay in, in my opinion. Again, as I'll say in a million threads, I'll need to really sit and watch all the episodes of season one to get a feel for what's important and what isn't. I advise you all do the same.
