Koizilla vs. Tidal Wave, which is better for live-action? - Thu Jul 08, 2010 11:25 pm

I like that a lot. It's always fun to push the characters into moral territories that they don't like to visit.

But what of the Fire Nation soldiers already in the city?

How advanced should the Fire Nation be? - Thu Jul 08, 2010 11:23 pm

Not necessarily.

The movie should develop the main characters first and foremost - that's what makes a good movie: good characters. If this can be done by adding in minor characters that were on the show, then all the better. However, if their introduction takes up too much time that could be used to develop the mains, then they become liabilities.

What plots/episodes need to be included in the movie? - Thu Jul 08, 2010 11:21 pm

Yeah I really like that idea. You're the one who posted a script before right? When I read how you included Suki in, and created a bit of a love triangle, I really liked it.

Yep, I'm that guy. Glad you enjoyed that! Very Happy

I should really finish writing it. LOL.

I also think that the romantic/dramatic tension between Sokka/Suki at the beginning of movie 2 like Veeri said would really be a great tie-in for the rest of the movie and a set up for movie 3 for the audience.

I agree. Suki/Sokka is a storyline that's carried throughout the series, so logically it should be carried throughout the movies as well.

It sounds good, but there's the problem of having it not really related to the rest of the movie. It's kind of like this random adventure that, if you take out, would make zero difference for the film. That's not a good sign.

It's like with Tom Bombadil from LOTR. Also, what's Aang doing at the NAT? Hanging out with Teo and the Mechanist?

Exactly what I was thinking.

Maybe the Gaang can go to Kyoshi to pick up supplies for their Earth Kingtom journeys at the beginning of the 2nd movie, only to find it in shambles because of a Fire Nation raid, and Suki chooses to stay behind and help the villagers rebuild the town.

Then at some point later she can try to join the others at Ba Sing Se, but on her way there she gets attacked by Ozai's Angels.

Good ideas. ^_^ Also, what if we added an emotional aspect into it? Some romantic tension with Sokka. I have Nyquil in my system, so I don't know if this will sound good to anyone who's sober right now. But Suki always showed this soft, inner feminine side on the show, along with her fierce warrior side. What if we have her leave to help her village, but also because she's upset/jealous/feeling rejected/some other emotion over the Yuekka romance? While she's off dealing with that, the Gaang can go on their way, Suki can get kidnapped, we can have Sokka finding out and being upset...

That would be fantastic. It's a very powerful story point that can be done with just a single bit of dialgue or even just a look.

Here's a thought: I've always thought the NWT siege ended too cleanly. If we have time, it'd be nice to see the NWT people dealing with the no-doubt massive amounts of Fire Nation corpses that will litter the city. I imagine that they would pile them onto an ice floe and send them out to sea, almost like what the Vikings did to their warriors, showing that they have enough honor to treat the dead of their enemies with respect.

I've also had the idea of combining the Kyoshi Warriors with The Blue Spirit by having the Gaang stop at Kyoshi, meet Suki, and then having Aang get kidnapped by the Yu Yan while he and Katara go off to practice Waterbending or something. Then The Blue Spirit can happen with Suki, Sokka, and Katara going off to try to rescue Aang only to have him being rescued by Zuko.

Having different nations having different, real life languages sounds cool, until you realize that you are then basically assigning real world peoples to be the good guys and the bad guys. The allegory of Fire Nation = imperial Japan, Earth Kingdom = China was subtle in the show, but it'll feel like a fantasy retread of WWII if the Fire Nation uses Japanese while the Earth Kingdom uses Chinese. As is, the nations have their own unique flavor while borrowing from East Asian culture without being too specific, and that gives us billingul bonus without getting political about it.

Imagine this as a real movie showing a Tibet-like nation being destroyed by a China-like nation. The controversy would be pretty intense.

I think keeping everyone writing Chinese will be good enough. Sometimes if it's not broken, a repair job is not really needed (I'm pretty sure that's how that saying goes).

Jet - Mon Jul 05, 2010 6:13 am

I'm really ambivalent over this. On the one hand, he probably becomes one of the most important Season 1 one-off characters in Season 2, but on the other hand I'd like to reduce the number of instances of "Gaang finds some guy, he has a story of his own, let's explore that for a while and forget about going to the NWT".

We can introduce him in Season 2, but with all that's going on his backstory will have to be seriously trimmed, and that can destroy his depth. He'll end up as just a plot device to get the Gaang into the Dai Li HQ and get Appa.

The 2nd one screams "Fire" to me, especially with those pointy ends.

Music - Sun Jul 04, 2010 8:31 am

Song with words would only be appropriate if sung by one of the characters (i.e. Four Seasons, Four Loves).

Absolute NO real world music with lyrics. That would just clash with the material on a fundamental level.

What plots/episodes need to be included in the movie? - Sun Jul 04, 2010 8:30 am

When considering all this, we should make sure the movie doesn't move like a bunch of smaller plots loosely tied together (i.e. a bunch of episodes); it should have a smooth flow, like water lol.

I've always had this idea of making Suki more prominent by having her (and only her) travelling with the Gaang from Kyoshi Island onwards all the way to the end. She and Sokka can bond, but not get together, and we can play with another unrequited love story, except it's the girl crushing on the guy, and the guy actually has another girl in mind (Yue). It'll be like Zutara, but reversed...or something. I don't know. The reason I want Suki to be more prominent is because she will be a major player at the end of the trilogy. M. Night has a point when he said that the Kyoshi Warriors should be cut because they don't show up at the end of the movie, but we can change that if we do include them (or at least just Suki) at the end of the movie.

Mandy has the right idea. We need to focus more on how the characters will develop and how the events of Season 1 can fit together into doing that, than picking certain episodes to be included in the movie. Ask yourself, does Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko, and Iroh (and Suki, IMHO) get significantly serviced by the plot being included? If not, is there another way?

For instance, I wouldn't include Imprisoned and The Northern Air Temple just so we can have Haru and the Mechanist for later. In my mind, we can introduce them in Movie 3 as people Hakoda met on his travels in the past and who got recruited into the Invasion force. Same thing with Bato. When we meet the Water Tribe men, we can meet him too.

Heck, I don't even know why I'd bother with Haru at all; we can just replace him with a random Earthbender really.

Koizilla vs. Tidal Wave, which is better for live-action? - Sun Jul 04, 2010 8:06 am

How would Aang making a giant wave get rid of the Fire Nation soldiers already in the city? Or are we gonna make like the film and have the Fire Nation surrender?

I don't like Aang personally killing that many people - in the finale he overpowered his Avatar State just to prevent the killing of one single person, and it kinda rubs me wrong to have him killing thousands here. IMHO it'd be best if his actions were really that of the Ocean Spirit's, Koizilla or no Koizilla. He can still feel guilty about having a hand in the deaths of so many, without going overboard and realizing he destroyed his beliefs by actually killing thousands. Otherwise, it'll make his issues in Sozin's Comet ring hollow. What's another life added onto thousands that he took just a few months earlier?

Opening? - Sun Jul 04, 2010 7:54 am

Indeed. The voiceover itself is fairly informative, and I don't see why it should change.

We could get more elaborate with the montage though. Instead of flying over mountains for the "Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads", we can actually show bits of each culture.

How advanced should the Fire Nation be? - Sun Jul 04, 2010 7:52 am

I don't see why it should differ from that of the shows on a fundamental level.

However, for live-action, I would probaly add more detail to the various parts of the ship, but nothing that would change the tech level.
